Employer Based Student Projects

Case study

City College, Plymouth

We have involved employers in setting research projects for second year Foundation Degree students, giving them real experience of working for a client to a project brief. This involves the employers in meeting with the students to set up the project and then engaging on an ongoing basis before finally spending a half day learning the outcome of their research project.

Tips

• Build good relationships with employers and start with those that you know well

Pitfalls

• Manage employer expectations so that they have a clear and realistic idea of what will be achieved

Resources

  • Financial: Hospitality when bringing employers in to see the end result of the research.
  • Time: Setting up the projects can be time-consuming
