Teaching on Modules
There is no doubt that the students with good placements have a better chance of getting a good job. This helps to keep a tight hold on the links."Dr Andrew Smart, Cornwall College Newquay
Case Study
Cornwall College, Newquay
We have created a new curriculum with one hour set aside each week to prepare for placements, led by our work based learning tutor. Sessions cover health & safety, what to do if your placement goes wrong, insurance, etc.
Employers deliver guest lectures on all of the course topics, but dont come in to talk directly about work experience. Instead they deliver sessions on topics such as surfers against sewage and then finish the session with 10-15 minutes where students can ask about potential work experience opportunities or other related issues.
The curriculum is supported by three individual tutorials at which students and staff discuss what sort of placement the students want, progress with applying, where to find placements and how the placement went. The design of this curriculum is an attempt to improve links between the college and employers, as well as making it easier for the work based learning tutor to follow progress.
Tips
Keeping a log of contact between students and tutors, students and employers and tutors and employers creates a better experience for the students.
