Low Carbon Sector
In response to the recent designation of the South West as a Low Carbon Economic Area (LCEA) in Marine Energy, the South West RDA in conjunction with HEFCE and Universities South West have made provision for 250 part-funded graduate internships available to businesses in the low carbon sector.
The project will seek to specifically engage with companies in the area of marine energy, but has also identified the demand for higher level skills for businesses and employees in:
- marine energy;
- non-marine renewables, e.g. micro-generation;
- low carbon manufacturing;
- civil nuclear (New-build and decommissioning); and
- renewable construction.

Interested?
All these internship programmes will be set up and administered by the individual universities in the region and will vary in their terms and conditions. However, there is funding attached to all the placements and businesses and graduates from all sectors and disciplines are eligible to apply.

Higher level skills training
Running in conjunction with the internship programme, the project also aims to work with companies to identify and provide higher level skills training for employees already working in the sector. Projections of future demand show that the need for skilled employees in this area will increase and that this must largely be met by people currently in the workplace.
The first phase of the project will therefore be product development and the delivery of skills training to meet the requirements of businesses in the sector.
