Our ficticious company STAR-LITE provides online commerce and stock control systems for internet retailers. With a turnover of £11m and a loyal customer base, the company is poised for rapid growth. Last year, it recruited a graduate to roll out new technology to clients.
However, after just six months, the graduate left. An exit interview revealed several issues:
- The job advert and actual role didn't match up
- The graduate had not received any training and development
- Management had been diverted from the project
- The absence of supervision meant that issues were not raised and resolved quickly
STAR-LITE used the findings from the exit interview to refine their recruitment, selection and development process:
- The new job advert stresses that this is a varied role and explicitly mentions the more operational support elements such as proof reading reports and updating the website
- The person specification includes the ability to develop problem solving skills to overcome barriers (such as management being diverted from the project)
- The induction checklist starts the process of effective supervision and line management
STAR-LITE are now in a much stronger position to attract, select and develop a graduate to help take their business forward.
STAR-LITE is a ficitious company used for demonstration purposes only. Any similarities between the ficticious company and any real company(ies) are purely coincidental
