Why Low Carbon?

We are at the beginning of a low carbon revolution, a time when we have to review what we do and how we do it. It is universally accepted that urgent action is required to find new solutions which minimise environmental impact and are sustainable.

Those companies that have started on their low carbon journey, are already seeing benefits such as new markets, customers and improved profits and performance economically, socially and environmentally.

Many say that the transition to a low carbon economy offers the greatest economic opportunities ever known. The global Low Carbon Environmental Goods and Services sector was valued in a recent BIS report at just over £3trillion, and the UK market at £106 billion, which actually ranks it somewhere between our healthcare and construction sectors.

Despite the current economic downturn, the low carbon environmental goods and services sector is still set to grow by up to 45% over the next 8 years. This is excellent news for the South West, which already has considerable strengths within the sector and is well placed to take advantage of this growing market.

The South West’s natural landscape lends itself to the promotion, investigation and exploitation of various forms of alternative energy. In fact, our world leading strengths in areas such as marine environmental technologies are well recognised, reinforced by the region’s recent designation as the UK’s first Low Carbon Economic Area in recognition of our leading work in Marine Energy.

Do I need to have studied a particular subject?

No. The Low Carbon sector encompasses many companies, products and disciplines. So, whether you have studied a directly related environmental subject or not, your skill set, experiences or area of expertise may be exactly what is required.

The project aims to place interns in businesses in the following sectors:

  • Marine energy
  • Non-marine renewable e.g. micro-generation which is the production of energy on the smallest of scales for individual buildings or communities, allowing consumers to generate their own heat and/or electricity. There are several technologies available including solar power, photovoltaic (PV) systems and solar thermal systems, ground source heat pumps, micro turbines powered by either wind or naturally flowing water and hydrogen powered fuel cells.
  • Low carbon manufacturing
  • Civil nuclear - New-build and decommissioning
  • Renewable construction - low-carbon, affordable homes and buildings using innovative, highly insulating, renewable materials.
