Environmental technologies

Environmental technologies are applied environmental studies including:

  • Environmental biotechnology
  • Industrial waste management
  • Hazardous waste management
  • Air and water pollution control
  • Industrial hygiene
  • Solid waste management

This dynamic, emerging sector consists of around 1,300 enterprises across the South West. It employs over 20,000 people and contributes around £1,300 million to the regional economy. It is estimated that economy associated with the environment has the potential to develop a further 39,000 jobs and £670 million of additional output over the next few years.

There are currently some 1,100 people employed in renewable energy alone in the South West.

Research * indicates that development in the sector is driven by:

  • Changes to UK and European Legislation increasing pressures on businesses to have robust environmental policies
  • Expansion in the global market for environmental goods and services
  • Increasing resource efficiency
