Salary Information

Year 1 £14,000, Year 2 £15,833, Year 3 £17,666, Year 4 £19,500 per annum whilst training

Background

The Met Office operates a full range of technology capabilities to support delivery of services to our customers. These include the management of the core underpinning infrastructure services, operation of the largest UK government website and development of new products and services to meet demanding customer requirements.

The Apprenticeship scheme will offer the opportunity to experience work across a range of different technology fields, building a broad level of capability before specialising in a particular area for the final two years. This approach provides not only a breadth of technology experience, but also supports the development of a wider network of colleagues that can prove beneficial for future career development.

Many Trainee’s and apprentices in IT at the Met Office have successfully progressed into valued senior members of teams. With approximately 400 IT staff on site in Exeter, we offer a very real opportunity for progression in a multitude of areas in technology.

Working Hours: Monday – Friday, 37 hours per week

Job Purpose

Working with teams across a range of technology disciplines to develop knowledge, skills and understanding, contributing to Met Office technology project and service delivery whilst also studying to gain a Bachelors level qualification.

Job Responsibilities

Individuals will be expected to build their technical knowledge in a variety of disciplines, supported by local mentors and a defined work plan. As skills develop, individuals will contribute to the wider objectives of their team through participation in office wide projects or service delivery activities.

Typically up to one day per working week will be spent working on content delivered by the University through an online learning environment. You will also attend three residentials of three to four days’ duration at the University during an academic year.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
  1. A genuine enthusiasm for working in Technology with an understanding of current and future IT trends.
  2. Good problem solving skills.
  3. Ability to plan and organise work using your own initiative.
  4. A great team player and communicator.
  5. Candidates will be expected to satisfy the entry requirements for this degree apprenticeship set by the University of Exeter. The typical offer is AAB at A-Level, or equivalent. Where candidates are awaiting exam results, any offer made will be conditional on meeting the entry requirements.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
  1. Knowledge of at least one programming language.
