Are you a recent graduate or are on course to graduate with a degree in an automotive engineering discipline?

If so, the Vehicle Certification Agency’s (VCA) Graduate Scheme could be for you!

VCA’s Graduate Scheme is an exciting, IMechE accredited, four year training programme made up of a series of placements and projects. Supported by a full timetable of formal and on-the-job training, we will equip you with the tools you need to become a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer and accelerate your career.

What will you do?

In your first two years you will find out about all the different areas within VCA and gain first-hand experience of the automotive industry through:

  • work placements around the UK and possibly abroad  
  • running projects
  • a variety of engineering
  • spending time at manufacturer’s sites
  • working at a vehicle testing laboratory

You will then spend the next two years honing your skills and applying your knowledge as a permanent member of the team.

Our Type Approval Engineers work with a range of bus, truck, car and motorbike manufacturers, witnessing and performing testing including crash, emissions and brakes testing to a range of internationally recognised standards.

What skills do you need?

You will need: 

• a 2:2 or higher (or expected)in an IMechE accredited degree (Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or an engineering discipline closely linked to those) 

• a UK driving licence or licence valid to drive in the UK 

• a valid UK work permit 

• ability to use a combination of general and specialist mechanical engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology 

• ability to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of engineering problems 

• ability to provide technical and commercial leadership 

In addition to the above, you must also be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and a personal commitment to professional standards, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment.
