Airbus is a global pioneer in aeronautics, space and defence-related services, creating cutting-edge technology. The Group operates in more than 170 locations worldwide. Airbus in the UK has a highly skilled workforce of 17,000 people with ten times this figure in its supply chain amongst c. 4000 British companies. It is the UK’s largest civil aerospace company and exporter, its biggest space and satellite company, as well as being the UK’s civil helicopter hub. In 2014 Airbus Group became the biggest supplier of aircraft to the Royal Air Force. All this is supported by a long-term strategy of investment in research and development and skills. The Group collaborates with 20 UK universities and spends half a billion pounds per year in UK-based research. Approximately 100 apprentices start with the company each year, with more than 4000 apprenticeships completed in the past decade.

The Central Research & Technology (CRT) organization is located at the core of the business and develops state-of-the-art work for the next generation of Airbus’s products. Within CRT, the Data Science teams develop technologies within the data analytics / machine learning area, and include competences such as Big Data platforms and analysis, biomedical data analysis, or wearable platform development.

Joining this Airbus Apprenticeship programme could be the ideal start to your career, just as it has been for many of our Senior Managers today. We consider our apprentices to be ideally qualified, with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to enable them to make an immediate contribution when they enter the workforce.

Joining Airbus through this opportunity would allow you to work within the central Research & Technology division of the company, particularly in the area of Data Analytics and Data Science. This apprenticeship programme is four years in duration and will be undertaken at the Airbus' UK Filton site in collaboration with our partner Exeter University.

This unique Degree Apprenticeship offers a full degree with no fees, plus advanced research engineering training with a regular salary. The first of its kind in the UK, Airbus is leading the way with this programme through which you will achieve a BSc Digital and Technology Solutions following the Data Analysis specialism.

Tasks & accountabilities

Along with your studies, you will be expected to take part in ongoing projects within the project team. Amongst other things, your training will include researching and testing new data analysis tools and methodologies, writing and documenting code in several programming languages, and in general learn why generating insight from data is important and how to achieve this for the type of datasets that Airbus produces. As your training progresses, you will be responsible for working independently, within a team, and once settled within the team you will be encouraged to manage your time effectively. You will be expected to express your thoughts and will be progressively required to play an active role within the projects.

In addition to your work placements and studies, there are a number of valuable training opportunities that cover a variety of subjects as well as encouraging you to get involved in education and community projects to broaden your experience and develop skills along the way.

Required skills

To apply, you must have minimum A levels of AAB with grade B or above in Maths, a BTEC Level Three Extended Diploma DDD or an IB 34. Please visit Exeter’s University web site for further details www.exeter.ac.uk/degreeapprentice. While secondary specialisms will be possible, the Data Analysis specialism should be taken as the primary specialism from Year 3.

Even though we do require the knowledge of particular technologies for applying to this apprenticeship, we will favour applicants with pre-existing general computing skills, including programming. Given the nature of the apprenticeship, curiosity about Data Science and Data Analysis will be extremely valuable. Please note that you must include a cover letter as part of your application for this programme which demonstrates your interest and motivation to join this particular apprenticeship programme.
