Job Description

This role will work closely with the Digital Humanities team which includes technical specialists and academic staff, as well as colleagues from the library and special collections. The Technical Assistant will be responsible for taking receipt of historic and current material for digitisation by the Digital Humanities team, using predefined workflows provided by the Lab Manager. The post-holder will act in a first-line advisory capacity to the Intern team regarding setting up equipment in lab spaces and prepare for regular lab bookings.

The Technical Assistant will provide the Lab Manager with support for the delivery digital research and teaching activity. Regular lab events such as Open Days, ‘hackathons’, ‘Raspberry Pi Jams’, ‘Wikipedia editathons’ and symposia may require occasional evening and weekend working. The post-holder will work closely with their undergraduate Intern team colleagues, under the guidance of the Lab manager. The role also includes the provision of basic support to current postgraduate students undertaking digital projects specifically around the set-up of equipment. Testing of digitisation workflows under guidance from our Lab Manager and Data Support Officer will be a task undertaken by the post-holder.

The Technical Assistant will receive a programme of basic training in 2D and 3D digitisation and audio/video production. Training will also be provided for support of our specialist equipment, including our Phase One cameras, 4m video wall and 3D printers.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to learn about the work of the Digital Humanities Lab in the context of a series of interesting projects, current examples include: digitising medieval manuscripts from Syon Abbey held in the University of Exeter’s Special Collections, the 2D capture of the Nicholas Toyne collection of photographic negatives from Northcott Theatre productions starring popular well-known actors, the capture of professional quality audio recordings of Lancashire Cotton Famine poetry, and the 3D capture of interesting local archaeological finds.

You will also gain significant experience in assisting with the organisation of a range of bookings, whilst assisting the Lab Manager in the preparation of a series of lab events such as research seminars, conferences, training and workshops. The Digital Humanities Lab hosts a wide range of customers, and you will have the opportunity to support innovative use of the facilities, for example setting up games consoles and laptops for use with our video wall during lab events.

The Lab is based in the College of Humanities, University of Exeter, which is rated amongst the top 100 global universities for arts and humanities.

Purpose of Role

The post-holder will provide a welcoming, responsive and efficient customer experience within the Digital Humanities Lab, for customers requiring digitisation work (according to set workflows). Key parts of the role include organising the receipt of a wide-range of material for digitisation projects, including 2D archival documents and 3D artefacts, and setting up for audio and video recording in lab spaces.

The GBP Technical Assistant will provide basic technical support for Digital Humanities teaching and research projects, spanning the following areas: archival photography, photogrammetry and Audio-Visual.

You will monitor the operation of equipment and record inventory within the Lab, following set procedures with opportunities to gain valuable experience and skills with these technologies. There will be an opportunity to learn how a range of historical texts and images are digitised to a high standard, and how to provide audio visual support to professional film makers.

A range of other administrative and space preparation duties may also be undertaken, commensurate with the role of Technical Assistant.

Duties and Responsibilities

This role will support the set-up of lab spaces and the receipt of material for digitisation at the Digital Humanities Lab our staff, students and partners. This involves:

  1. Day-to-day maintenance and preparation of Digital Humanities Lab spaces and equipment according to the DH Lab care guides
    1. Identifying and recording display issues for our video wall in the Seminar room
    2. Undertaking archival photography in lab 1
    3. Setting up and operating a range of portable photographic equipment in lab 2
    4. Basic support for the operation of photographic, technical and audio-visual equipment, and administration of a log of equipment to be repaired or replaced
    5. Entry level support and troubleshooting of 3D print facilities in our Makerspace
  2. Responsibility for the receipt, logging, handling and monitoring of archival material on site for digitisation by our Intern team, including adherence to set lab workflows
  3. Supporting the Lab Manager to undertake Digital Humanities project work, both within the lab and on location
  4. Assisting the Lab Manager in the organisation and delivery of Digital Humanities training and events to Interns and undergraduates
  5. Working with users of the Lab and providing advice for the use of loan equipment and media as skills allow

Appropriate training to monitor and deliver day-to-day technical support across the Digital Humanities Lab and any other relevant Digital Humanities technologies or methods will be given to the successful candidate.

You may also be required to carry out any other duties and projects as required by your Line Manager, commensurate with the level of the post.

Essential Candidate Criteria:

Qualifications

  • Good first degree qualification from a UK university, preferably in a humanities-related subject.
  • Degree (UG or PG) wihin the last 3 years.
