Job Description

A Communication Assistant is required by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Plymouth, based in Ashburton. The role involves website updates and analytics; social media coordination; email campaigns; creating monthly newsletters; and media enquiries. This is a well-paid 12 month GBP internship.


This role is vital to the smooth running of our communications in the Diocese.  You will be a key member of the team that promotes the Bishop’s vision for the Diocese through our social media channels, website and e-newsletters – ultimately making sure that the right information about what we do in the Diocese is reaching the right people.

As Communications Assistant you will be part of the new Communications team and report to the Œconomus and the Bishop’s clergy delegate for Communications.

The role is full-time – 35 hours per week.  Usual days of working are Monday to Friday.  It does require some occasional evening and weekend work in order to attend some of our events and gather content by meeting parishes and volunteers.

As Communications Assistant you will be encouraged to work across the Diocesan teams, to tactically support their day-to-day communication needs and work on a variety of projects.  This might involve putting together e-newsletters; maintaining the website; keeping our blog updated with new articles; and working with communication representatives in other areas of the Diocese to come up with content ideas.

The Diocese encourages a friendly and supportive working environment and, as this is a new role, we will support you to develop and grow in the role through training, coaching and other development opportunities.  You will gain technical knowledge and experience of using social media, web, newsprint and other channels to engage our audience.  You will also develop your organization skills in order to liaise and maintain good working relationships with communication representatives in the parishes and in the Curia, which is the administrative hub of the Diocese.

What you will need to succeed:

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of web and social media engagement and a great eye for visuals.  You will work independently and towards a brief and, hence, you must be able to work autonomously.  You will receive training on the Content Management System, although a basic understanding of website management is essential.  This is a content role, so good written communication skills and good organisational skills are required, particularly in managing the campaign calendar.  You need to be able to use Photoshop or other image editing software.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Keep the content of the Diocese’s new website up-to-date and work with the Communications team to develop and grow the site.  This includes helping to train other Diocesan units in using the new Content Management System (CMS) and editorial systems.
  • Day-to-day, act as the central point to co-ordinate the Diocese’s social media presence and engage with our key audiences.
  • Act as a brand guardian by promoting the consistent use of clear and consistent messaging and visual identity correctly in other Diocesan units.
  • Regularly collect and monitor the analytics for our new website, e-newsletters and social media with the aim of improving engagement.
  • Administer e-mail campaigns (using Mailchimp) as per the campaign calendar, monitor and report effectiveness (clicks, bounces, integration, abandoned….) to the Communications team.  Ensure that appropriate follow-up procedures are carried out for aspects of the user journey that entails e-mail integration, for instance New Joiners and Deletions.
  • Work with colleagues in other Diocesan departments and also the parishes to produce and distribute our monthly e-newsletter on Mailchimp, including sourcing content, editing and designing articles.
  • Organise quarterly meetings, with support from the Œconomus and the Bishop’s clergy delegate to review the e-newsletter process and report back on statistics and learnings to the Communications team.
  • Organise the Diocese’s central communications and social media calendars linking closely with the Diocesan Youth team and other key event areas in the Diocese. 
  • Monitor photo consent forms and ensure that the Communications team is up to date on photo policy.  Organise the Diocese’s video and photo library to ensure that we have an archive that can be referred to, and meets our communications strategy.
  • Work with the Œconomus and the Bishop’s clergy delegate to deal with media enquiries keeping records of press coverage and contacts.
  • Able to drive and have access to a car for business purposes.

Person Specification:

We are looking for someone who has good writing skills and is creative and confident in using website, social media and e-newsletters to get our messages across.  You do not need formal qualifications in communications, but we would welcome applications from people with experience of working in marketing communications or PR and who are educated to a degree level or equivalent.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent
  • Some experience or an interest in developing a career in PR and communications
  • Confident in using social media platforms and a creative approach to developing content
  • Strong understanding of SEO and other web optimization techniques to improve site visits and ranking in Google search results
  • Experience with online monitoring and measurement platforms including, but not limited to, Facebook Insights, YouTube Insights, Buffer, Google Analytics, Hootsuite, Twitter analytics
  • Experience of designing e-newsletters and other documents and working with images and photography
  • Ability to manage and prioritise a variety of tasks and deliver to deadlines
  • Experience of managing relationships with external suppliers such as web developers and design agencies
  • Self-motivated, with the enthusiasm, passion and ability to generate new ideas and bring them to fruition
  • Ability to summarise complex data and messages
  • Great team player, collaborative and happy working with staff at all levels in the Diocese
  • Excellent communications skills, including face to face and on the phone
  • Excellent written, editing and proofreading skills, and the ability to produce compelling social media posts/blogs
  • Flexible, ability to work on your own initiative as well as part of a team
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends and to travel to locations other than the office if necessary

Desirable Skills and Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level in Marketing related subject
  • Video and photography skills
  • Experience of using Adobe Photoshop packages and content management systems
  • Experience of working with churches or schools
  • Experience of working in media, communications, PR or marketing

Other Requirements

  • Graduate of a UK university within the last 3 years/Student at the University of Exeter
  • Right to work in the UK for the duration of the internship.
