Job Description

A Flood & Coastal Risk Graduate is sought by Devon County Council, in Exeter. The role to assist the team in delivering the varied roles and responsibilities expected of the Lead Local Flood Authority with the aim of reducing flood risk to properties within Devon. This GBP is for 12 months minimum.

Devon County Council is the Lead Local Flood Authority for their area, delivering the roles and responsibilities defined under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010. A dedicated Flood & Coastal Risk Management team, which sits within the Environment Group of the County Council, is responsible for delivering this function.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose of Role

To assist the team in delivering the varied roles and responsibilities expected of the Lead Local Flood Authority with the aim of reducing flood risk to properties within Devon.

Duties and Responsibilities

Initial duties and responsibilities will include assisting with the day to day flood risk management activities mainly in the office and at times on site. This will rapidly progress to dealing with the public, other risk management authorities and outside bodies on land drainage enquiries, watercourse consenting and enforcement, minor flood investigations, sustainable drainage and surface water management and flood improvement projects. As knowledge and experience develops there will be opportunities to take on more responsibilities and ownership of specific elements of work or projects.

Training and Development opportunities

The team has a good balance of civil engineering combined with environmental and physical science to deliver all aspects of Flood Risk Management. There will be plenty of opportunities to learn from others and were appropriate to attend technical/non-technical training courses and/or seminars/workshops to improve skills and knowledge. Whilst there are no guarantees for future employment beyond the initial 12 months there is the possibility of an extension for a further 11 months or other opportunities may arise within the team.

Level of Support

The post holder will be assigned a mentor and will work alongside them daily. Contact with the line manager will also be daily but with more formal assessments arranged every 1 – 2 months or as required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Attainments/Qualifications - Has successfully graduated/completed a Civil Engineering, Geography or other relevant degree at the University of Exeter or from a UK University, preferably with a focus on flood risk management and/or drainage design.

Skills and Understanding – An understanding of the legislation surrounding Flood Risk Management will be beneficial. The post holder will also need to be able to communicate well through various media, including email, telephone and face to face, be a good team player as well as happy to work on their own initiative

Prior Experience - Experience of using technical software such as ArcMap GIS or AutoCAD. Dealing with the public.

Behavioural Characteristics/ Personal Qualities and Attributes - Flexible and keen to develop their own knowledge and skills, highly motivated, technically minded, an ability to support others and willing to take ownership of their work

Other Requirements

Graduate of a UK university within the last 3 years/Student (about to graduate)

Right to work in the UK for the duration of the internship.
