Job Description

🌍 Change the World – and Your Future 🌍
Join the Environment Agency, where your passion for engineering and the environment can make a real impact. Climate change is reshaping our world, and you can be at the forefront of solutions that protect communities, wildlife, and natural resources. This is your chance to launch a career that combines purpose, innovation, and real-world impact.

About Us

The Environment Agency is dedicated to protecting and improving the environment across the UK. We work with local communities and partners to reduce flooding risks, ensure water supply, and set environmental standards. Every day, we tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time – and you could be a part of it.

Your Role as a Civil Engineering Graduate

As a Civil Engineering Graduate with us, you’ll play a crucial role in reducing flood risks and supporting our journey to becoming a carbon net-zero organisation by 2030. Our Graduate Training Scheme is a structured, hands-on programme that spans 4-5 years, giving you the skills, experience, and network to kickstart an extraordinary career. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Diverse Placements: With 6-12 month rotations across different teams, you’ll get to work on everything from asset management to project planning and site supervision.
  • Flexible Pathways: Your journey is tailored to your interests. Whether you want to focus on hands-on engineering, strategic planning, or project management, we help you shape your future.
  • Learning & Development: Accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), our programme guides you toward Incorporated (IEng) and Chartered (CEng) status.

Teams You’ll Work With:

  • Asset Performance: Help maintain critical flood defences, assess assets, propose solutions, and manage small construction projects.
  • Partnerships and Strategic Overview (PSO): Contribute to future flood defence projects, conduct financial benefit assessments, and engage with partners and communities.
  • Programme and Contract Management (PCM): Lead projects that protect communities, gaining experience in financial management, contract negotiation, and supplier coordination.

Throughout the programme, you’ll work alongside expert engineers and receive mentorship and support from our professional development advisors.

What We’re Looking For

Are you passionate about making a difference? If you’re a graduate with a background in Civil Engineering (ideally with an MEng or BEng degree) and have an ICE-accredited degree, we want to hear from you. Successful candidates will hold, or be prepared to obtain, a full UK driving license within six months.

To thrive with us, you’ll need:

  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn from diverse placements
  • Strong people skills and the ability to collaborate effectively
  • Leadership potential and problem-solving abilities
