Job Description

Be a Force for Environmental Change with the Environment Agency!

The environment is transforming, and so can your career. Join us at the Environment Agency and be a part of the change. Together, we protect communities, tackle climate challenges, and build a sustainable future for everyone—people, wildlife, and nature alike.

 The Opportunity: Graduate Mechanical Engineers

Are you a recent Mechanical Engineering graduate looking to make an impact? We’re seeking passionate graduate engineers to join our MEICA (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control, and Automation) teams. As part of our team, you’ll help reduce flood risks, protect communities, and contribute to our pioneering goal of achieving carbon net-zero by 2030. Your work here won’t just be a job—it’s a chance to drive real change.

 Your Development Journey

Our Graduate Scheme is a 4-5 year, structured program tailored to help you become an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Here’s what you’ll experience:

  • Hands-On Experience: With internal and external placements, you’ll dive into every aspect of our work, from asset management to design, planning to site supervision.
  • Guided Learning: Under the mentorship of experienced engineers, you’ll develop technical and professional skills that set you up for success in your career.
  • Personalized Pathway: Each placement is designed to match your individual growth goals, building a foundation to become a future leader in your field.

During the program, you’ll spend 3 to 12 months in various roles, gaining insights into real challenges, building essential experience, and making your mark on projects that matter.

 Why Join the Environment Agency?

  • Supportive Community: You’ll have access to mentors, coaches, and a network of around 70 graduate engineers who share your mission and goals.
  • Diversity and Flexibility: We are committed to inclusivity, offering flexible work arrangements that reflect the communities we serve. Every voice is valued in our diverse environment.
  • Competitive Pay and Growth: Our pay structure reflects your qualifications, with BEng graduates starting at £30,242 and MEng graduates at £30,997.

 Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for graduates with a drive to make a difference and the following:

  • Skills: Strong abilities in teamwork, leadership, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Credentials: A BEng or ideally, an MEng in Mechanical Engineering accredited by the Engineering Council. Check the IMechE website to confirm that your degree meets the criteria for IEng or CEng status.
