There are 133 schools and academies in the Diocese of Exeter, most of which are primary schools but we also have some secondary schools. These schools nurture and educate 28,500 children and places at them are frequently sought after by parents. We are proud of all our church schools, of their values and the high standard of education they offer, and of their links with the community.
We are now recruiting skilful volunteers to serve as governors in primary schools, secondary schools and academy trusts across Devon.
You don’t need lots of experience and you don’t need to be a parent. All we ask is that you value Church of England education, share our passion for making our schools the best they can be and have the commitment and skills needed as a governor.
Schools, federations and multi academy trusts are complex organisations which have a public duty to ‘get it right’. Serving on governance boards will give you first hand experience of leadership and strategy. Whether you are developing or honing your leadership skills, they will be tangible, transferable and, for some, professionally valuable.
As a governor, you’ll get the opportunity to lead, serve and develop to make a positive difference to the educational experiences and outcomes of children and young people.
The average time commitment is 5-8 hours per month and we have vacancies across the cities, towns and rural areas of Devon.
Serving as a governor may be of particular interest to teaching /education students and graduates who wish to gain insight into the strategic leadership of schools. That said, we welcome and encourage expressions of interest from all disciplines. Equally, we are keen to hear from those with workplace experience - including all those in organisations and businesses who recruit through Gradsouthwest!
The selection process:
We ask all prospective governors to submit an expression of interest form online. We will then contact you to find out more about the skills you can offer, your interests and preferred location.
We – and the schools we work with – are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
The appointment / election process will vary, but as a minimum, references will be taken up and you will be required you to undergo an enhanced DBS check as part of the process. Please note: this is a voluntary role for which no payment is made.
