What do you expect from a CV?

At the begining of June we were on the judging panel looking at this year's bunch of creative entries to their CV competition. We saw beautiful designs containing original artwork. 

Although we see creative CVs in the creative industries - we'd love to hear from employers as to what you expect in other sectors.

Do you expect anything more that a simply typed and formatted Word document?

Business-academic partnerships: apply now

 Businesses can apply for funding to bring in a graduate to collaborate on an innovation project. 

Up to £40m of funding is available for businesses to work with an academic/research organisation and a graduate on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership.

Projects can focus on any technology or industry area; and can last between 12 and 36 months, depending on what it is and the needs of your business.

Digital Skills Survey - Heart of the South West 

Logo: Heart of the south west LEPThe Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (covering Devon, Plymouth, Torbay and Somerset) is inviting all businesses across the area to complete this survey.  It applies to all businesses not just those with digital specialisms.

By undertaking this survey the partnership aims to better understand the digital needs and knowledge of businesses – helping them to adapt to compete in the future.

Thank you for your Words of Wisdom

Last month Gradsouthwest asked, based on your experience, what makes an application stand out for shortlisting and what makes it head straight to the shredder. Here are a few of your gems:

- Skills and knowledge are a given; so are drive and enthusiasm

- Take note of what the employer asks for - send a CV, a covering letter, a portfolio, an application form if that's what you are asked to do

- Typos and poor grammar are a real no no

- The magic ingredients? The qualities that make most impact are ‘humility’ and ‘empathy’

And if you make it to interview, be weary of appearing to ‘know more’ than the interviewer - avoid arrogance like the plague! It illuminates the exit sign far faster than a little inexperience or even ignorance of detail.
