GradTalent Development Agency

New Funding to Help You Recruit

Gradsouthwest has partnered with Bath Spa University, the University of Bath, Bath College and the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership to provide employment services to South West businesses and graduates.

Funded by the Office for Students, the GradTalent Development Agency seeks to increase the retention of home-grown talent* by linking graduates with graduate opportunities offered by employers in the south west.

The funding allows us to offer eligible employers:

  • Specialised matching of local graduates to vacancies with local employers
  • Individualised graduate recruitment and selection tailored to the employer’s needs
  • Post-placement support to both the employer and graduates, designed to optimise on-boarding and ongoing development
  • Advice and guidance to assist businesses employing graduates with a disability
  • Additional assistance available for SME businesses navigating through the recruitment process

The funding is open to SMEs in Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and the West of England (Bristol & Bath areas) that haven't used Gradsouthwest in the last 2 years (since Oct 2017).

What Do Graduates Do?

It’s a myth that students move to university and then leave en masse for London after they graduate.

So says the latest What do Graduates Do report from Prospects Luminate which details employment outcomes for the graduate cohort of 2016/7.

For the south west, the figures bear this out; most working graduates are drawn from within the region with 67% originally domiciled and 66% studying here. Indeed, the south west fares well as the fifth most popular of all twelve regions.

It is also a myth that south west graduate employment is predominantly in SMEs. Over 55% of the surveyed cohort work in large businesses with over 1,000 employees - a fact often overlooked by the students we talk to. Only 31% work in SMEs.

Interestingly, unlike some other regions, recruitment agencies and websites like Gradsouthwest are the most popular way for graduates to find work, closely followed by employers’ websites. If you want to recruit graduates into your business, the implication is clear – make your website the best it can be to attract the talent.

Record student registrations

We spent much of the last month at Careers Fairs across the south west and Wales and are pleased to report the highest levels of student sign-ups we have ever seen.

Over 800 students registered with us during the events and many more took our details to sign-up online. All those we spoke to expressed a strong desire to stay and work in our area. This is mirrored by our website stats which are currently at record levels.

Tap into the graduate desire to stay in the south west and Wales by targeting your recruitment campaign with us.

What do Graduates do in Wales?

The latest report from Prospects Illuminate give some interesting facts and figures about graduates in Wales:

  • 7,960 UK-domiciled graduates were employed in Wales within six months of graduation
  • Like many other large cities, Cardiff is a graduate magnet - attracting 2,115 of the 2016-17 UK cohort to work in the city.
  • Four-fifths of those 2016-17 graduates working in Wales were originally from the country.

Skills in Wales

Skills in Wales

Last month the Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee at the National Assembly for Wales published their report on regional skills partnerships in Wales.

The report makes a number of recommendations including on the need to stimulate higher level skills demand in Wales. Helping ensure the correct utilisation of new graduates in Wales forms part of the rationale for We make graduate jobs in the country more visible for students and graduates to find suitable graduate level work on completing their studies.
