Gradsouthwest and GradWales are pleased to see the newly-launched cross-border economic partnership the Western Gateway being launched to support economic, social and educational benefits to a region close to our hearts.

This morning the Welsh Secretary and the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government announced the launch of the Western Gateway.

The Western Gateway is the first cross-border ‘powerhouse’ partnership of its kind and will lead to one shared vision of delivering economic, social and educational benefits to a region of over four million people.

The Western Gateway partnership is a collaboration of several local authorities that span the Severn estuary. Partners in Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire, Swindon, Cardiff, Newport and Swansea have been working towards this moment for a number of years - and national Government are now supporting the initiative too.

The Western Gateway is an essential collaboration to develop sustainable and inclusive growth in the region. Next steps are to grow the initiative further with new partners across sectors, develop governance and set out actions to deliver on the promise of the region.

Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns said "The Western Gateway will provide an arena for the joint strengths of two neighbouring areas with distinct identities and traditions to be harnessed. South Wales and the west of England already form a natural economic region with excellent transport networks in road and rail and well-established links in business, industry and education. The region can be a true powerhouse of the UK economy if we take this opportunity to galvanise its many strengths to generate ideas, innovation and entrepreneurship in order to stimulate jobs and growth."

Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “Today’s announcements mark a significant milestone in the journey towards developing sustainable growth and delivering an economic boost for a region of over four million people. Our work with partners has seen us develop a shared vision for our cross-border economy that we are now ready to bring to life.

"I look forward to continue working with all partners on this initiative and unlock economic, social and educational benefits for all across the region.”
