Job Description

We are looking to recruit 2 Environmental Health Graduates to work on an exciting new project in the central area of Swindon.  You will be working with Environmental Health Officers and Fire Service Safe and Well advisers in a defined project area, starting in the vibrant Broad Green area of town.  You will reach out to residents both in their homes and at local centres, identifying and acting on issues found to improve both housing and the local environment.  You will at times work with other agencies, such as the Police, and Fire & Rescue Services, and will be involved in formal enforcement where appropriate and with appropriate support.

You will be based in the 'Healthy Neighbourhoods' Environmental Health team, and professionally supervised by experienced Environmental Health professionals, but you will be directed day to day by the locally based project co-ordinator.

You will be afforded sufficient exposure, across the duration of the contract, to all fields of Environmental Health to enable you to complete your portfolio, but this not a student position, and you will be expected to complete your portfolio solely in your own time.  These posts provide a valuable opportunity to complete your portfolio whilst earning, and will give you valuable experience with which to begin your career as a fully qualified Environmental Health Officer.  These posts will particularly suit an EH graduate with some Local Authority experience now wishing to complete their PPP / ELP and other professional requirements.

You will have a degree, or equivalent, in Environmental Health and graduate membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. You should be able to demonstrate a broad technical background across a range of Environmental Health disciplines, in particular in the fields of Housing & Environmental Protection, and possess some relevant practical experience.  It is also critical that you possess excellent people skills; with a proven ability to listen, explain, negotiate and influence.  You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act - for the effective performance of a customer-facing role).
You will likely have some experience of inspecting dwellings for EH issues, and will ideally possess Housing Health & Safety Rating System (HHSRS) accreditation, although training will be provided.

An ability to travel throughout the Borough will be required.

This role is 37 hours per week and a fixed term contract for 18 months.
