We have a fantastic new opportunity for a full time Indirect Tax Assistant working in the Tax Division based in Bedford House, Taunton.  The purpose of this role is to support the Indirect Tax Manager in delivering efficient and compliant delivery of VAT Returns and VAT Management.  We will support you in getting the relevant tax qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

·         Prepare VAT returns for all UK and Republic of Ireland businesses to required standard and timescales, sourcing and analysing data from many parts of the organisation. The role will also involve periodic dealings with HMRC, and the Revenue Commissioners in Ireland, as they seek to assure themselves of our tax compliance. 

·         Support the Indirect Tax Manager on compliance matters including the management of our Product VAT coding. This will mean routinely interacting with other parts of the organisation, such as Finance, Customs, Buyers & Merchandisers and Legal, at the appropriate level. 

·         Prepare the annual partial exemption adjustment and forecast to map against any business changes related to exempt supplies.

·         Liaison on international VAT registrations and reporting requirements.

·         Assist the Indirect Tax Manager with business development activities e.g. new territories & franchises. This can mean dealing with external advisors as well as those inside our organisation.

·         Keep up to date with any legislative changes relating to VAT in countries in which Debenhams has a commercial interest; reviewing, renewing and developing VAT procedures, and deputising for the Indirect Tax Manager at meetings as required.

·         Confidence in problem solving and able to identify trends that may impact on organisational strategies.

·         Ability to maintain focus and objectivity whilst dealing with competing deadlines.

·         Appropriate skills to rapidly identify problems, and to find appropriate solutions and implement the necessary actions to resolve the problem.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

·         A Graduate or candidate with good A levels and work experience, preferably in a Finance role will be considered.

·         A tax qualification or experience of working in a VAT field is welcome.

·         A good understanding of Excel is essential. The job will routinely involve the use of Pivot, Lookup and If Functions, and the manipulation of large tables of data.

·         Aptitude for dealing with tax authorities.

·         Able to work towards a formal tax qualification.

·         Ability to act on initiative, with good problem-solving skills, and to work without detailed supervision.

·         Good interpersonal skills.

This role is based in our Taunton Support Centre, Bedford House, Park Street, TA1 4DB.
