Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Devon County Councils Waste Management Team to assist with our education and community engagement projects. Devon has achieved a recycling rate of over 55%, however while we continue to strive for higher recycling rates, we also recognise the greater need to reduce our waste. Educating children and engaging our communities to take action is an essential part of our long term strategy to achieve a more sustainable future, with an emphasis on waste minimisation and resource management.

You will assist with the contract management of both the Waste Education Programme and the Community Engagement programme. This will involve liaising with contractors, schools, community groups, local authority officers and councillors. You will promote the Waste Education Programme and The Zone website using a wide range of communication methods including compiling and distributing the half termly e-zine ‘The Sustainability Bulletin’ and using appropriate social media. In addition, you will be responsible for organising and delivering school and community visits to waste management facilities across Devon and providing practical waste management advice to schools and community groups.

You will have either a degree, NVQ level 4 or equivalent experience in an Environmental/Sustainability subject with a sound understanding of waste prevention, re-use and recycling. You will need to be enthusiastic, well-organised and confident, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Experience of working with children and/or community groups would be an advantage. You will also need a sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and social media.

In return, as well as a friendly work environment, we will give you support, learning opportunities and training to develop your skills as part of our career progression scheme.
